About Derby Opera Company

In 1881 "Derby Amateur Operatic Society" and "Derby Lyrie Opera Company" were founded and in 1896 they amalgamated to form "Derby Operatic Company". Finally "Derby Opera Company" was adopted as it's title, the oldest company in the country, celebrating it's centenary in 1991.

The company has produced a show each year, except during the two World Wars, when it's activities were devoted to charity concerts. It has used a variety of venues - The Grand Theatre in Babington Lane, the Royal Drill Hall, The Hippodrome in Green Lane, the former Gaumont Cinema, Derby Playhouse and at present, Derby Assembly Rooms. The earliest productions were often Gilbert and Sullivan operettas and eventually musicals both English and American were presented, some being amateur premiers in the area.

The company has been proud to see former members become professional performers in both musical theatre and grand opera. It is very grateful to it's regular patrons and is always happy to welcome new members. Over the years, the company has been pleased to donate to a wide variety of local charities. The company's aim is to bring the joy of musical theatre to the Derby audiences and hopes to welcome many Derbians to its future productions.
